Working on a school project about the Corvair (thanks to all those that helped) and I was surprise to see they had a copy of this book (from 1991). And to any interested, I’ll post my assignment when it’s done on the 4th, (currently 450 out of 1500 words in) I figure some of you guys might find it interesting. I also have a 1000 word essay on Dunlop if anyone is curious, I could post it too.

I read that in high school I was 14, I kept thinking what a crock of shit people should just make sure their tires are in good condition, the the Ford Explorer tire thing happened and it was Deja Vu all over again.

Was it filed under fiction?

It’s an interesting period piece. I read the first few sections for shits & giggles and it’s more of a perspective into ‘60s life and attitudes at this point. Mr. Nader does not reveal himself as an anti-car boogieman with this book, if anything, it argues for things like sway-bars and proper engineering.
Fun fact: Mitt Romney’s dad is mentioned somewhere in the book. George W. Romney was running American Motors Corporation at the time.

I agree to a certain extent, it’s similar to an article that was on Jalopnik a while back about how the EPA is helping the advancement of cars and what not.

I found a copy in my high school library back in the late 90's. I promptly checked it out ... and then never read it.

Nader got his rep, because he pissed off automotive journalists by suggesting they didn’t care enough about looking into the safety and quality of the products they reviewed, instead were more interested promoting cars to get ad money. So instead of getting better at writing, they spent the next three decades trying make Nader look like an idiot, sort of proving his criticisms about automotive journalism right.

There’s a really good book all about debunking Nader’s claims about the Corvair. The problem is the author demonstrates they have absolutely no clue whatsoever about how things like sway bars and other basic suspension components work, so anybody who knows even a little about cars can see he’s complete moron, and book becomes hilariously incorrect on almost every point it tries to argue. I can’t remember the title at the moment though, but you will sometimes see people reference it as “proof” the corvair was as safe as any other car of its era.
